In 2021, DC and Marvel Comics are walled kingdoms, separated by 3000 miles and two time zones and ultimately possessed by parent corporate giants Warner Bros. Discovery (the name of the proposed AT&T spinoff) and The Walt Disney Company. For decades there was rivalry and competition between D.C. and Wonder, and sometimes even cooperation, with maybe the apex of their joint efforts being a pair of unprecedented crossover (and mash-in the lead) events in 1996.
The comical book market was in freefall at the time, and retailers WHO owned and operated independent drama book shops needed something they could trade the bejeezus out of. Hence DC versus Marvel Comics, a full-on inter-company crossover that brought two universes together, and the Amalgam and DC Marvel Each Access books that followed.
And sometimes in the middle of all that almost came the unimaginable - a trade of DC and Marvel.
The editorial forces behind Marvel versus DC (yes, the title was swapped accordant to what publisher released what issue) were the late Mark Gruenwald connected the Marvel side and Microphone Carlin at DC. A perfect pairing of like-minded merry pranksters, Carlin had even cut his teeth at Marvel as Gruenwald's assistant before moving along to the 'Of import Contention.' When you put through the pair together, the creative Department of Energy that emerged was addition, but multiplication. And their collaborationism almost concluded up in a seemingly soft on endgame.
"I think Carlin and Grunewald had some system," says Paul Levitz, and so DC's publisher. "I think an melodic theme being discussed, that we would swap out some characters. I don't know that it lasted more one meeting with me or individual just throwing up along the table and expression, 'Oh, God, that is so much more work than it could possibly be worth.' I do commend conversations around it. I recollect the thought was characters that we wouldn't of necessity leave out, but could possibly do more valuable by generating new matter to in another universe."
Sure, a couplet of legitimate C-listers were the proposed characters: She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter. Besides the green motif, it made a certain sense that these characters could equal swapped in a very additive way.
"I felt suchlike those were great picks, because at the least in price of power sets, they're kind of unnecessary characters," says Ron Marz, one of the Direct current Versus Marvel writers. "She-Hulk is, cured, a Lady Hulk. And Martian Manhunter is pretty close to Superman, just green with a proud brow. They both would've seemed more original in the opposite universe."
It also seemed, at the time, a natural annexe of impulse, and what fans wanted to see.
"There was enough of fan conjecture at the time. The audience was sure that information technology was going to happen," says Tom Brevoort, longtime Wonder editor. "There was a nascent cyberspace community in those days, and then many fans were sure IT was passing to materialise."
The idea got off the ground, but just barely.
"As we got into the process of constructing the story, we had more of a conversation about that expression: Do we have to form this into the last issue somehow?" Marz remembers. "Eventually, we got word that it wasn't going to happen, because legal entities at some companies recovered IT too more of a nightmare."
Today, the almost-trade is the Bigfoot of comics, gritty footage that no one is sure is real. Brevoort and Marz still get questioned about it connected a regular basis.
"The notion of 'maybe we leave a eccentric in the other universe at the end of this' seemed like it would comprise good fun if we could really pull round pass," Marz says. "I don't know what could have been through with. Would She-Hulk union the Justice League and Superior planet Manhunter join the Avengers? The X-Men? I don't think either character had their own title at the time. Simply for a brief moment, we were thinking, 'yeah this could beryllium really cold."
A subsequent DC-Marvel crossover, 2003's JLA/Avengers is among the most unlikely comedian book crossovers ever.
